Jeff and Patty remained on The Harbinger; the rest of us took off in a scout for the city. We refilled the food supplies, then Charlie brought them back to The Harbinger, where he would remain till I’d contacted him to come pick us up. Charlie was the only one of us with a kid. Toy-making was a hobby of his, and for months he’d been working on building a mini functional solar system for his son’s birthday; he wanted to get back to that craft today.
In the city once again, the others and I went to a dinner-and-dancing hall/bar someone in the food supply house had recommended. And by the time we walked into the hall, I was starving; we all probably were. But the big restaurant was people-packed, with only one small table left—for four.
I both smiled and sighed. “Well, you five figure out which four of you can have that. There’s space at the bar; I’ll eat there.”
I walked away, my eyes on the hall’s orange-red décor around me, my black boots pounding the shiny orange-red floor below me. I felt out of place in all the hot bright. Before we’d left, I’d washed up a little and changed my clothes again. I was wearing all black now, black jacket over black shirt over black pants over black boots.
My black self slid onto one of the bar’s high-top chairs. As I slipped my boot heels behind the chair’s lower bars, I felt someone brush near my left—Thom.
I looked up at his straight face, and he shrugged as he sat down. “Apollo and Bess seemed to really want to sit together.”
I opened one of the menus. “Yeah, they’re good friends suddenly.”
“How long you know Apollo?”
“Oh, years. Since we were teenagers.”
The bartender walked over to us, and Thom and I spent several moments figuring out what to order—we didn’t talk to each other during. We were both in our own I’m-hungry world.
I ordered a glass of imported vodka mixed with fresh fruit juice, and a roasted-vegetable pasta dish and side salad.
Thom finally placed his order, with my eyes giving him a once-over while he spoke to the bartender. Where I was in all black tonight, Thom was in all brown, a very pale brown, just a few notches above beige. His freshly washed hair shone and the room’s orange-brown lighting bronzed the tips of his golden strands. He looked gorgeous.
Pulling my eyes away, I swallowed, then my eyes shifted to the video-monitor above the bar’s back wall. The place had several moving spotlights and recording cameras on the ceiling, so everyone could watch the dancers up close more. In the crowd I saw bright spots and dark spots; people slid in and out of both, moving against each other and through the hall, even among the dining tables occasionally. How embarrassing, I thought. Dancing wasn’t my thing.
Thom finished with his order, and then he also began watching the monitor. I wished I had brought something to read—something else to do other than think about how increasingly uncomfortable I felt being close to Thom.
